Insight

The existing space in the Yoh Football Center was dated and didn’t provide a modern wow-factor for recruits and student-athletes.

Existing and New Lockers and Showers

Solution

With the hiring of a new football coach, Duke took charge on renovating the football locker room and player’s lounge spaces between football seasons to exceed facility standards in the ACC Conference and amongst other Power 4 schools.

SLAM worked with Hollman Lockers to integrate Vyv technology with non-UV anti-microbial lighting in the locker room and individual lockers. This product disinfects over 90 percent of surfaces and gear, supporting the long-term success and health of athletes and staff.

The cutting-edge clean light technology controls and mitigates the spread of harmful contaminants promoting the health and safety of the student-athlete. The antimicrobial lights operate during the evenings and will not interfere with access or use of the locker room.

SLAM worked alongside Jack Porter on experiential branding to bring fresh graphics and LED digital signage to elevate the overall football experience by bringing the space to life with a shared mission and unmistakable culture.

Impact

The locker room space was revealed in July 2024 with smiles, laughter and awe from the player’s and coaching staff. This space will be the home for Duke Football on gameday and everyday, providing an impactful and functional area to build team culture and improve performance on and off the field.

The culture of Duke Football is amplified throughout their new spaces, including tributes to the gothic arch and wrought iron gate in the hype tunnel, Blue Devil spirit in the entry ways, Iron D’s in the locker room, and larger-than-life images of player moments on the locker end caps. The storytelling within this facility highlights the program’s successes and inspires recruits and players to perform at the highest level within College Athletics.

The project also includes converting a dated hall of fame on the 3rd level into separate recruiting and players lounges with an adjacent outdoor patio overlooking the football stadium. These spaces will significantly improve the Football recruiting path in the Yoh Football Center.

INSIGHT

Sacred Heart University needed an ice arena that reflected the institution’s significant growth and national status in men’s and women’s hockey. For more than 30 years, SHU’s ice teams traveled off campus for both games and practices. Dedicated to all their student-athletes, past and present, SHU was committed to providing their students the best experience possible.

SOLUTION

The arena was designed to create an immersive and intense game experience for fans and players alike as well as being a West Campus attraction. The arena is a multi-year building and expansion program aimed to reflect the institution’s growth, national status, and commitment to community.

Sacred Heart’s arena is not your traditional windowless ice rink. The transparent floor-to-ceiling glass connects the building occupants to the region’s upland forest, meadows, and wetlands. The views are made possible using smart glass. It’s dynamic glass that automatically tints the glass to protect the ice surface from direct sunlight. The clear glass changes to an opaque appearance for daylight control.

A boldly branded interior tunnel-like pathway is designed to fuel excitement and create energy every step of the way with dramatic interactive light sensors activated by motion.

As the anticipation builds in the tunnel, it opens up to SHU’s logo prominently displayed in terrazzo flooring – a landmark of the grand entry plaza and stairwell that signifies clear pathways to fans’ final destination.

Fans are engaged and entertained with a digital ribbon board and light show, a center-hung videoboard, and uninterrupted views across the ice.

The Concourse Level

Pioneer fans are invited to full immersion, from the top-loaded open concourse to its 180 degrees of glass that connects the indoors to the changing seasons of the outdoors.

Event-Level Team Space

Both private and secure team suites, including changing spaces, sports medicine, physical training, video review and education, coaching, equipment, and access to the ice.

The Premium Level

At the upper premium level, the Arena features two separate club spaces, private suites, and a large president’s suite – all designed for game night as well as hosting events and corporate outings.

The South Lobby

Why the south lobby…

IMPACT

Since opening, the rink has been a packed house every game creating an intense, immersive experience for players and fans.

INSIGHT

Local residents used the park’s facilities heavily, and nearby schools and cities relied on it for indoor and outdoor sports and open space for community events but renovations were overdue for the existing pool and bathhouse which contained hazardous materials and were not energy efficient.

SOLUTION

The new facility incorporates energy and water conservation devices, sustainable design features, and green building components. It also provides wheelchair access, landscaping and winding walkways.

The project site of over 3 acres, replaces a former 2 acre 6′ depth zero entry swimming pool. The new 25 meter x 25 meter competitive pool is equipped with diving boards and covered spectator seating. The plan focuses on views of the existing lake, meadow lawns and woodlands that were previously obstructed by fencing around the existing pool.

IMPACT

The project received LEED™ Gold Certification

Low water consuming fixtures were installed throughout, including censored low-flow toilets and waterless urinals. Drought tolerant vegetation and landscaping species were specified to reduce water consumption. The irrigation system is electronically controlled and fitted with a sensor to detect precipitation in order to reduce or halt water usage on storm days.

Natural ventilation features capitalize on the site’s proximity to the South Bay beach environment. Perforated metal clearstories allow passive air flow. Photovoltaic solar collection panels contribute back to the power usage of the facility.

The project is located along the way of public transportation paths. Bike racks are provided for public use to accommodate and encourage alternate means of travel to and from the park.

During construction, appropriate material waste was recycled. Products with recycled material content were utilized on the project as well as local regional materials sources.

The project provides improved recreation and educational facilities and services to the all ages of the community. The project also included a Civic Arts component of which a local artist was selected and provided the enhancement to the terrain park in the form of silhouette images throughout the grounds of the skate park.

With the Rock Cats (now named Yard Goats) ballpark home in New Britain nearing the end of its second decade, there were renovations and modernizations that needed to be made. Building a brand-new park, without having to leave the metro area, was an interesting opportunity for team management. Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra agreed, citing that it would aid in an effort to keep the franchise from moving out of Connecticut and revitalize Hartford’s downtown.

INSIGHT

The main drivers behind the renovation project were to establish a new standard of recruiting excellence, provide an activated space to promote student-athlete recovery, and deliver Georgia Tech’s fresh brand.

SOLUTION

The trademark GT hexagonal pattern is expressed throughout the design to tie in the lockers, ceiling feature, graphics, and finishes into a cohesive and consistent branding element.

Digital displays, dual-charging stations, self-healing finishes, lockable storage, and jumbo-sized exhaust systems are incorporated in each individual locker.

A unique focal point within the locker room is the new hydrotherapy center featuring two new in-ground, custom plunge pools. The 4-foot-6-inch cold pool operates as a walk-thru plunge pool with bench seating along one side. The 4-foot hot pool operates as a deep plunge pool with wrap-around bench seating. Adjacent to the plunge pools is a fully immersive rain shower, allowing players to rinse off prior to entering the pool.

IMPACT

The Yellow Jackets’ 15-year-old locker room has been transformed into one of college football’s most state-of-the-art sports dressing spaces. The redesigned space generates eye candy, as well as functionality for Georgia Tech’s combined gameday and everyday locker room. The renovation incorporates the latest technology upgrades to further drive the Georgia Tech vision.

“

The locker room is one of the areas where football student-athletes spend most of their time, so this upgrade will not only benefit our current student-athletes, but is also a big part of our efforts to enhance our football recruiting.

INSIGHT

Georgia State Stadium, with its nimble infrastructure and past lives as the former Centennial Olympic Stadium and Turner Field, was recently faced with a third transformation—a collegiate football stadium and home to the GSU Panthers.

Each use had opening dates that could not be missed, keeping a tight timeline for both design and construction with each stadium conversion.

“

GSU Athletics has the opportunity to build an athletics district with the stadium as the hub for all student-athletes, just minutes away from main campus. We are excited to add GSU’s story to the historic events that have taken place within this facility.

Patrick Hatcher
Associate Athletic Director for Facilities & Operations, Georgia State University
”
SOLUTION

With each re-use of the facility, the different tenants found a way to make it their home with unique branding, fan engagement, and right-sized amenities.

The original 85,000-seat Centennial Olympic Stadium opened on May 18, 1996. SLAM’s design of the original facility accommodated the shape of a future baseball stadium, such as a uniquely angled backstop at the SW curve of the track. These design accommodations accelerated the conversion of the 49,000-seat Turner Field and opening to fall within 10 months, on March 29, 1997.

Turner Field featured numerous premium seating options from the SunTrust Club behind home plate and the 24,000-SF “755 Club”, to the Chop House behind the right-center field seats and the Coca-Cola Sky Field for elevated viewing platforms. There was also a fun kid zone and 67 luxury suites. With the 2017 conversion to GSU Stadium, many of these premium spaces were converted into gameday amenities, University event rental spaces, and gameday operation hubs.

The site’s last conversion, as the Georgia State University Stadium, took place in a fast-track 9 months, allowing the Panthers football team to move into their new space two weeks prior to the opening game on August 31, 2017.

IMPACT

The Georgia State Stadium exemplifies an extraordinary re-use of facility amenities and existing infrastructure – as host to the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, the Atlanta Braves, dominant in their division, and now with Panthers Football lighting the stadium blue to signal major home wins.

The 1996 Olympic games brought together 197 countries, 10,320 athletes, and 271 events. The Centennial Olympic Stadium was the featured facility that hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the Track and Field events.

Turner Field was the home of the Atlanta Braves for 20 years and hosted many milestones for the program, including 38 postseason games, as well as Games 1 and 2 of the 1999 World Series and the first National League Wild Card Game.

Georgia State Stadium is an asset to GSU Athletics and to the University. The facility is the current home for football gameday, football team facilities, baseball team facilities, all student-athlete strength + conditioning and sports medicine center, and coaches / administration offices. The University utilizes the premium areas on non-gameday for event rentals, as well as space below the stands for the University Police Department, ROTC program, the GSU Recycling program, and the University Renovations department.

“

“The transformation of GSU Stadium and the surrounding area has successfully impacted GSU’s athletic program and the university. The design team’s knowledge of the Olympic Stadium and Turner Field helped us transform this facility into a right-sized game day environment for Georgia State. Our new home gives us the opportunity to recruit top-notch athletes and build a future for Panthers Athletics.”

The goal was to create a dynamic, modern facility located just north of the Campus Field end zone and act as a beacon for wellness and fitness. There were a number of programs both Division 1 and club/intramural sports that did not have a home on campus. Many of these programs were in need to facilities to support better training needs and more durable materials to last longer and work for a variety of sports.

SOLUTION

SLAM created a building design that is open and flooded with daylight allowing for an uplifting workout experience. Its a space for student recreation, that also houses Club Sports, Intramurals & the Fitness Department.

In the evening the building glows from the 40-foot glass enclosed climbing wall which invites students from the nearby residence halls. The deep cantilevered roof functionally protects the entry glass from sun and weather but is appears to demonstrate a structural gymnastic and is almost athletic in its reach and form.

IMPACT

The facility enhances the fitness experience for student athletes and general student population providing a home for student recreation on campus. It also houses the Club Sports, Intramurals & Fitness Department.

The design team was challenged to integrate multiple program components into a single cohesive space focused on the student-athlete as a whole, supporting both their well-being and academics. Understanding the main purpose of the project: to create an integrated academic support system that focuses on the graduation of student-athletes from the University of Arkansas, offered much reward to the design process.

SOLUTION

The project houses academic, nutritional, advisement, personal and professional development components and also includes the Razorback Leadership Academy, supporting athletes in their community outreach and campus leadership roles.

Student-athletes have great demands on their time navigating the campus between classrooms, workouts, rehab, and practice. This facility provides ‘on-the-go’ refueling with convenient nutritional options to accommodate their hectic schedules.

The building’s central spine provides natural day lighting and easy access to study rooms, tutoring rooms, computer and learning labs, staff and academic counselor offices, and a 170-seat auditorium.

IMPACT

Offering integrated space that fosters healthy life choices and maximized athletic performance through nutrition, the Jerry and Gene Jones Student-Athlete Success Center proudly boasts an exciting new space focused on graduation of all student-athletes from the University of Arkansas.

INSIGHT
The Nippert Stadium renovation project has two major goals: to enhance the spectator experience for football and to strengthen the quality of the campus.  The project was shaped by the interrelationship between its functional requirements and contextual responsibilities; it must perform well on game day and throughout the year for non-game day events. Multi-purpose fan amenities and premium spaces were a main programmatic driver for the project.
SOLUTION

The new West Pavilion provides a gateway that is an extended covered walkway and ties into the existing daily pedestrian paths. Located on a constrained site, the building comes within 8 feet from the adjacent student center. To preserve the gateway, the curved geometry of the lower bowl, the gateway cantilever, and the increasing size of the upper floor plates (creating a tilt to the west) all led to a diagonal structural system, which is freely expressed inside the building, and reflected in the parallelogram geometry of the glass and metal panel exterior skin on the north, west and south sides.

The glass stadium facade provides significant light and views to the playing field and surrounding campus buildings.

“

The team clicked from Day 1 and never looked back. SLAM remained responsible for the entire project, and the team acted with a single-minded purpose that belied its newness and geographic separation. The entire team always felt “local” and close-at-hand, never remote, preoccupied or lacking in enthusiasm.

IMPACT

The 7-level, 130,000 SF press and VIP tower enhances fan amenities with 1,100 new club seats, 30 new loge boxes, and 21 new private suites. The new stadium facility takes advantage of the confined site restrictions with floor to ceiling glass on almost every interior or exterior wall parallel to the field.

Major project components include:
An enhanced concourse and pedestrian access, an outdoor roof terrace for pre-game activation, a 50-seat President’s suite and private suites for Athletics Directors, meeting and dining rooms to host 120+ events annually, and press and broadcast facilities.
